How to Make your Attitude Work for you
The word “attitude” originally comes from the Italian word attitudine meaning disposition or body posture. Later, it was generalized to a mental state of the body. Now, attitude means a complex mental state involving beliefs, feelings, and values to act in certain ways. In other words, our mental state plays a role in shaping our behavior. Your attitude is pretty influential. William James says, “It is our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which, more than anything else, will affect its successful outcome”
It’s a new year and many are starting it off with goals or visions we have for ourselves. As you plan to do those, don’t forget the role of your attitude! Practice cultivating an attitude that balances positivity with reality.
Here’s how…
1. Practice Positive Affirmations because you really are awesome!
2. Set SMART goals- Specific, Measurable, Relevant, Time sensitive
3. Practice Self-Awareness. This means learning to be aware of yourself, your feelings, desires, motivations, and character. Self-Awareness helps you communicate with yourself better. It helps you to know what you need to move forward.
Motivation comes and goes so create opportunities for small wins. This will help you to maintain a healthy hopeful attitude! When you are feeling motivated, plan for times when you won’t be. (If you know Thursdays are busy days and you tend to skip exercise, set out your workout clothes/ running shoes the night before or set up a run with a friend that day) Learn to facilitate environments to increase your chances of success. (If you know your phone is a distraction when you are studying, put it in a different room or try a focus app) You can do it! We are here to support and celebrate with you as you do!
